Tax Takes Its Place on the Boardroom Agenda
2 September 2026
Tax Academy of Singapore (TA) and the Singapore Institute of Directors (SID) marked a milestone with their inaugural joint seminar, Board’s Blind Spot: Tax Strategy & Risks in a VUCA World, held on 2 September 2026.

Organisers, Panel Speakers & Moderator (left to right): Mr Sam Sim, Ms Eunice Toh, Ms Ng Pei San, Mr Dennis Lui, Professor David Rosenbloom, Professor Dr René Matteotti, Mr Ow Fook Chuen, Mr Hari Subramanian, Ms Elizabeth Huang, Ms Samantha Xu, Mr Vineet Rachh
Bringing together directors, tax professionals and business leaders, the seminar examined why tax must feature more prominently in boardroom discussions on business strategy, governance and risk management.
The discussions highlighted the importance of considering tax early in major business decisions—from investments and mergers and acquisitions to restructuring and cross-border expansion. Speakers also emphasised that an effective tax strategy should go beyond achieving the lowest possible effective tax rate. It should support sustainable business outcomes while remaining aligned with the organisation’s wider responsibilities, risk appetite and long-term objectives.

The seminar brought together perspectives from academia, industry, government and the board community. Speakers included Professor David Rosenbloom (NYU School of Law), Professor Dr René Matteotti (University of Zurich), Ms Pei San Ng (Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore), Mr Vineet Rachh (Procter & Gamble), and Ms Samantha Xu and Mr Hariharan Subramanian (Singapore Institute of Directors). The discussion was moderated by Mr Sam Sim, Board Member of Tax Analysts (USA).
One message emerged clearly: tax is increasingly inseparable from economics, business strategy and corporate governance—and therefore deserves a place on the board’s agenda.
Tax Academy looks forward to continuing its work with SID and other partners to bring together the people and perspectives shaping the future of tax, business and governance.
